What is a Raw Alkaline Diet

Fruits and vegetables

The raw alkaline diet is a dietary approach that emphasises the consumption of raw, unprocessed, and alkaline-forming foods. It is based on the idea that by eating a predominantly alkaline diet, you can promote better health and prevent various diseases.

Here are some key principles and components of the raw alkaline diet:

  • Alkaline Foods: This diet focuses on foods that are believed to have an alkalising effect on the body. These foods are typically low in acidity and include fresh fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens, sprouts, and some nuts and seeds.
  • Raw Foods: The diet encourages the consumption of raw, uncooked foods. The belief is that cooking can destroy some of the beneficial enzymes and nutrients in food, so raw foods are preferred. Common choices include salads, smoothies, and raw fruit and vegetable dishes.
  • Avoidance of Acidic Foods: Acidic foods, such as processed foods, dairy, meat, and grains, are discouraged or eliminated in this diet. The goal is to maintain a more alkaline pH in the body.
  • Hydration: Staying properly hydrated is essential. Natural alkaline spring water is often recommended to help maintain a more alkaline pH in the body.
  • Supplements: Some proponents of the raw alkaline diet suggest the use of supplements, such as green powders, seamoss, seaweeds and herbs, to ensure that you get a variety of nutrients.
  • Detoxification: Detoxification is often considered a key component of this diet. Proponents believe that eating raw and alkaline foods can help the body rid itself of toxins.
  • Portion Control: Although the diet allows for a wide variety of foods, it may require portion control, as excessive consumption of nuts, seeds, and certain fruits can lead to excessive calorie intake.

Eating more fruits and vegetables and reducing processed foods is generally a good idea for overall health.
