4 Cascara Sagrada Preparation for Cleansing and Strengthening the Bowel

Cascara sagrada bark

Cascara sagrada, also known as Rhamnus purshiana, is a plant that has been used medicinally for a long time, specifically as a laxative. The indigenous peoples of North America have utilised cascara sagrada for centuries as a natural remedy for constipation. The laxative properties of cascara sagrada are attributed to anthraquinones, which are chemical compounds found in the bark. These anthraquinones stimulate the muscles of the colon, facilitating bowel movements.

There are several traditional recipes that incorporate cascara sagrada:

  1. Cascara Sagrada Tea:

    1. Begin by boiling water in a pot.
    2. Add approximately 1 teaspoon of dried cascara sagrada bark per cup of water to the boiling water.
    3. Reduce the heat and allow it to simmer for 10-15 minutes.
    4. Remove from heat and strain the liquid to separate the bark.
    5. Optionally, you can enhance the taste by adding agave or lime.
    6. Consume 1 cup of this tea before going to bed to experience its laxative effects. Start with a small quantity to assess its potency and gradually increase if necessary.
  2. Cascara Sagrada Tincture:

    1. Fill a glass jar with dried cascara sagrada bark.
    2. Pour enough alcohol, such as vodka or brandy, to completely cover the bark.
    3. Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place for a minimum of 2 weeks, shaking it daily.
    4. After 2 weeks, strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any bark particles.
    5. Transfer the tincture to a dark glass bottle for storage.
    6. Take 1 teaspoon of the tincture diluted in water before bedtime as needed for occasional constipation.
  3. Cascara Sagrada Infusion:

    1. Steep 1 teaspoon of dried cascara sagrada bark in boiling water for 20-30 minutes.
    2. After steeping, strain the liquid and enjoy it warm.
    3. If desired, you can sweeten the infusion with agave or add lime.
    4. It is recommended to drink this infusion before bedtime to assist with constipation.
  4. Cascara Sagrada Decoction:

    1. Simmer 1 teaspoon of dried cascara sagrada bark in water for 15-20 minutes.
    2. After simmering, strain the liquid and allow it to cool slightly before consumption.
    3. It is advised to drink this decoction once a day, preferably in the evening, to help alleviate constipation.

For extended treatment of constipation, cascara sagrada is recommended. Cascara sagrada is renowned for its powerful laxative properties, facilitating bowel movements effectively. However, it’s crucial to be aware that the fresh bark can be highly irritating and toxic, particularly to children. Over time, cascara bark becomes more potent through a gradual process of oxidation.
