How is Almond Milk Really Made?

Almond milk

Almond milk is a popular dairy milk alternative made from almonds. It is a relatively simple process that involves blending almonds with water and then straining the mixture to separate the liquid from the almond solids. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how almond milk is made:

Ingredients:

  • Raw almonds
  • Spring water
  • Optional sweeteners (e.g., date sugar, agave)
  • Optional flavourings (e.g., vanilla extract)

Why to Not Buy Store Bought Almond Milk

While store-bought almond milk is convenient, there are some reasons why people may choose not to buy it and instead make their own almond milk at home:

  1. Additives and Preservatives: Many commercial almond milk brands include additives and preservatives like carrageenan, lecithin, and various stabilisers to extend shelf life and improve texture. Some people prefer to avoid these additives for health reasons.
  2. Added Sweeteners: Store-bought almond milk often contains added sweeteners, such as sugar or syrups, to improve the taste. Homemade almond milk allows you to control the sweetness level or choose to skip added sweeteners altogether.
  3. Lower Almond Content: Commercial almond milk may contain a lower percentage of almonds compared to homemade versions. Some people prefer to make almond milk at home to ensure a higher almond content.
  4. Environmental Concerns: The almond industry has been associated with environmental concerns, such as high water usage in almond cultivation, which can be a concern in regions with water scarcity. By making your own almond milk, you can potentially choose almonds from sources that align with your environmental values.
  5. Cost: Store-bought almond milk can be more expensive per serving compared to making your own almond milk from almonds.
  6. Customisation: Making almond milk at home allows you to customise the flavour and texture to your preference. You can experiment with the almond-to-water ratio, sweeteners, and flavourings like vanilla or cocoa to suit your taste.
  7. Reduced Packaging Waste: Store-bought almond milk comes in cartons or plastic bottles, generating packaging waste. Making almond milk at home can be more eco-friendly as it reduces packaging waste.
  8. Fresher Taste: Homemade almond milk often has a fresher taste compared to store-bought versions, as it doesn’t undergo the same processing and pasteurisation.

It’s important to note that while store bought milk might be convenient there are more advantages to making almond milk at home.

Note: Dr. Sebi sometime before his passing stopped recommended almond milk as he noted that it contained cyanide. Alternatives are coconut milk, walnut milk and Brazil nut milk.
