Why Are Some People Lactose Intolerant?

Lactose intolerance

Generally babies are born with an enzyme called lactase which the body uses to breakdown the lactose in milk. After the period of breastfeeding, this enzyme is rapidly reduced in the child – to varying degrees. As such, the body is often not able to properly assimilate milk after this period. Simply, we are not supposed to be drinking milk after we are weaned!

A cow, like a human female,  carries her calf over a period of 9 month to birthing – her milk is produced to feed and nourish her calf, in the same way the human female produces milk for her baby.  So, why are we drinking her calf’s milk?

Cows are usually kept in a perpetual ‘state of pregnancy‘ so they can continue to produce milk even when they wouldn’t in a natural setting; and are often treated with growth hormones and exposed to toxic chemicals, such as herbicides and pesticides.

In addition, the process of pasteurisation destroys any nutritional value that may be present in milk.

Do a bit of research on how milk is produced and you will probably think twice about giving it to your child and/or drinking it yourself. You will find that it is in fact  one of the more mucus forming food and not good for human consumption.

There are many other types of milk you can consume instead of cow’s milk. They include:

  • Almond milk
  • Almond-coconut milk
  • Hemp milk
  • Coconut milk
  • Quinoa Milk
